- Lunar New Year
The Lunar New Year is a public holiday celebrated throughout the country, and is embraced by a series of festivities. Shopping centers mainly located in west Jakarta hold several events during the weeks prior to and right after the Lunar New Year, such as lion dances with fictional dragons. Another point of interest which also holds this event is the Petak Sembilan neighborhood located in Glodok which is also referred to as Jakarta’s Chinatown, while the seaside district of Ancol hosts dragon boat races.
- Cap Go Meh
The Cap Go Meh festivities mark the culmination of the New Year celebrations and are celebrated fifteen days after the Lunar New Year. They are also identified as the Festival of Lanterns. The word Cap Go Meh implies the “fifteenth day of the first month” and comes from the Chinese Hokkien dialect.
- Jakarta Fashion and Food festival
Jakarta Fashion and Food festival is an annual partnership between one of the city’s prominent property developers and the Jakarta Tourism Office, this festival takes place in the Sentra Kelapa Gading region of north Jakarta. Designer fashion shows are jointly held together with a celebration of international and local culinary events.
- Jakarta Highland Gathering
Scotland may be on the other part of the world, but Jakarta also hosts its own kind of the traditional Highland games and celebrations at the Highland Gathering. In recent years, the festival has taken place in the Lippo Karawaci region in Tangerang and it is a much anticipated event for both locals and expatriates alike. - Festival Palang Pintu
Festival Palang Pintu is also identified as Festival Kemang and is jointly arranged by the government of Jakarta and Sanggar Manggar Kelape (a Betawi artistic and cultural group residing in Kemang, south Jakarta). During this event, the already lively neighborhood of Kemang hosts fashion shows, bazaars, parades, and fun bike events, while the cultural Betawi food is sold at street stalls.
